John Jewell and Elizabeth Wingham

Married 1859

At the time of the 1871 census, the family are living at 23 Awbridge Hill, Michelmersh, Hampshire.

At the time of the 1881 census, the family lived in Salisbury Lane Cottage, Romsey Extra, Hampshire, England. They seemed to be largely engaged in carpentry.

At the time of the 1891 census, the parents and two of the children are still living at what may actually be the same address - something like Stanbridge Cottage, 59, Salisbury Lane, Romsey Extra, Hampshire.

There may have been an initial error in the 1891 census entry, as the household actually appears on two pages. On the first page the address is actually number 58 rather than 59, however it appears the whole page has been crossed out, and the details entered again on a second page.

The most likely entry for the marriage in the GRO indicies is for Oct/Nov/Dec 1859 (Romsey, volume 2c, page 115). There are two Elizabeths listed here - one Wingham and one Winghorn.

Husband:   John Jewell

Born: 1826
Died:
Father: Jewell
Mother: Ann

Occupation: Carpenter
In the 1871 census his age is entered as 39 and his place of birth King's Somborne.

According to the 1881 census, he was born in Awebridge, Hampshire. His age was recorded as 54. Here his occupation is entered as carpenter.

At the time of the 1891 census, John is entered as being 59, and his occupation wheelwright. His place of birth is given as Kings Somborne, Hampshire. Although many of these details do seem inconsistent with the earlier entry, the presence of the rest of the family members seem to confirm this is the same John Jewell.

At the time of the 1901 census, John's age is entered as 70, and his place of birth again Kings Somborne, Hampshire. As before his occupation is entered as carpenter.

Wife:   Elizabeth Wingham

Born: 1841
Died:
Father:
Mother:

Aged 40 at the time of the 1881 census, this would imply she was born between 4th April 1840 and 3rd April 1841. Recorded as having been born in Michelmersh, Hampshire.

Aged 50 at the time of the 1891 census, her name is entered as "Elizabeth M. Jewell", and her place of birth is again given as Michelmersh, Hampshire.

Aged 60 at the time of the 1901 census, her place of birth is again given as Michelmersh.

Her possible surname(s) have been taken from the GRO indicies for marriage records. Two entries appear in the indices tied to the same page - one Wingham and one Winghorn. However, it seems more likely Winghorn is a transcription error.

One possible entry for her birth in the GRO indices is that of a "Elizabeth Mary Wingham", registered Jan/Feb/Mar 1842 in Romsey (the area covering Michelmersh) - volume 7 page 166. The Mary here could link up with her middle initial "M" given in one of the census entries.

Female  Child 1:   Louisa A Jewell

Born: 1860
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the birth of a Louisa Ann Jewell in Oct/Nov/Dec 1860 in Romsey (volume 2c, page 71). This seems a very likely match.

Aged 10 at the time of the 1871 census, her place of birth is entered as Awbridge, Hampshire.

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the marriage of a Louisa Ann Jewell in Apr/May/Jun 1881 in Southampton (volume 2c, page 54). This again seems a very likely match. Only one other man's name is indexed on the same page - one James Cole.

Female  Child 2:   Elizabeth Jewell

Born: 1862
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

Aged 8 at the time of the 1871 census, her place of birth is entered as Awbridge, Hampshire.

Male  Child 3:   William Edward Jewell

Born: 1865
Died:
Spouse: Angelina Elcock
Children: William Edward Jewell, Mary Jewell, Archibald John Jewell, Percival Jewell

Occupation: House Carpenter
Aged 6 at the time of the 1871 census.

Age 15 at the time of the 1881 census (implying he was born 1865/1866),  when he lived with his parents.

Aged 25 at the time of the 1891 census, where his surname seems to have been incorrectly indexed as "Javell", as the handwriting is not so clear. Here his occupation is entered as carpenter and his place of birth Romsey.

Aged 34 at the time of the 1901 census (implying he was born 1866/1867), by which time he was the head of the household, living at 108, Kingston Rd, Portsmouth.

His birthplace is recorded as Awebridge, Hampshire in the 1881 census, but Romsey in the 1901 census.

This seems very likely to tie in with a birth record for William Edward Jewell in the GRO indices for Oct/Nov/Dec 1865 (Romsey, volume 2c, page 69).

He appears to have followed in his father's footsteps. In the 1881 census his occupation is recorded as "Carpenter's Assistant", and by 1901 it has become "House Carpenter". At the time of the 1901 census two of his brothers - Charles and Henry - are living with him, so it may be they too are involved in the family business.

Female  Child 4:   Fanny Ellen Jewell

Born: 1868
Died:
Spouse: Charles Robert Payne
Children:

Aged 3 at the time of the 1871 census.

Aged 13 at the time of the 1881 census. Her birthplace is recorded as Awebridge, Hampshire.

This seems very likely to tie in with a birth record for Fanny Ellen Jewell in the GRO indices for Jan/Feb/Mar 1868 (Romsey, volume 2c page 80).

Female  Child 5:   Sarah A. Jewell

Born: 1869
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

Aged 1 at the time of the 1871 census, her place of birth is entered as Awbridge, Hampshire.

As Sarah does not appear in the 1881 census, she may have died in childhood. In fact there is an entry in the GRO indices for the death of a Sarah Ann Jewell, aged one, in Apr/May/Jun 1871 in Romsey (volume 2c, page 78).

Female  Child 6:   Bessie Jewell

Born: 1871
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

Aged 9 at the time of the 1881 census. Her birthplace is recorded as Romsey, Hampshire.

Aged 29 at the time of the 1901 census, at which time she is unmarried  and living with her parents, with her birthplace recorded again as Romsey.

Female  Child 7:   Jane Jewell

Born: 1876
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

Aged 4 at the time of the 1881 census. Her birthplace is recorded as Romsey, Hampshire.

Male  Child 8:   Charles John Jewell

Born: 1877
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

The census entries imply he was born between April 1876 and March 1877. This ties in very well with a Charles John Jewell listed in the GRO indices for Jan/Feb/Mar 1877 as having been born in Romsey (volume 2c page 81).

Aged 4 at the time of the 1881 census, his place of birth is entered as Romsey.

Aged 14 at the time of the 1891 census, his name is entered as "Charles J. Jewell", and his place of birth is again given as Romsey.

Charles also appears in the 1901 census, aged 24, and living with his elder brother William. He may have joined the family carpentry business by this time, and seemingly his brother was in charge.

Male  Child 9:   James Jewell

Born: 1880
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

James is recorded in the 1881 census as being just 6 months old, which would suggest he was born in October 1880.

Although his brothers Charles and Henry later appear in the 1891 census, still living at home, and in the 1901 census, living with their brother William, and seemingly involved in the family business, James does not.

This may suggest he died at a young age.

Male  Child 10:   Henry Jewell

Born: 1881
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

Henry was probably born shortly after the 1881 census, perhaps between April 1881 and March 1882.

Henry appears in the 1891 census, aged 9, with his place of birth recorded as Romsey.

Henry appears in the 1901 census, living with his elder brother William, aged 19.
