Comments: The census entries imply he was born between April 1876 and March 1877. This ties in very well with a Charles John Jewell listed in the GRO indices for Jan/Feb/Mar 1877 as having been born in Romsey (volume 2c page 81).
Aged 4 at the time of the 1881 census, his place of birth is entered as Romsey.
Aged 14 at the time of the 1891 census, his name is entered as "Charles J. Jewell", and his place of birth is again given as Romsey.
Charles also appears in the 1901 census, aged 24, and living with his elder brother William. He may have joined the family carpentry business by this time, and seemingly his brother was in charge.
