Married 1860
There appears to be an entry in the GRO indices for the marriage of a Mark Samuel Milliner in Poplar in Jan/Feb/Mar 1860. Unfortunately the page and volume numbers are almost impossible to read on the index page. The volume may possibly be 1c and the page number appears to begin with 8.
Husband:
Mark Samuel Milliner Born: 1840 Died: 25-Sep-1879 Father: Samuel Milliner Mother: Occupation: Shipwright His name is taken originally from the IGI entry for his daughter Elizabeth's birth/christening. Here his surname is spelt Milliner. It appears Mark was born in Chatham, and assumedly lived there until some time in the 1860s. His first daughter Elizabeth, was born in Chatham but his second daughter Jane was born in Sheerness, so he probably left Chatham some time between 1862 and 1866. After leaving Chatham he moved to Sheerness, where it seems he spent the rest of his life. Presumably, given his occupation, whilst living in Chatham he would have worked at Chatham Dockyards. After his move to Sheerness it seems logical that he continued to work at Sheerness Dockyards. On his son George's birth certificate, his occupation is entered as "Shipwright Hill Dockyard" - although the word "Hill" is a little hard to read, and could be Mill perhaps. Mark would probably have still been working in Chatham Dockyards at the time the HMS Achilles was built there between 1861 and 1863, in which case it is possible he may have worked on this ship. At the time this was the biggest sail ship in the Royal Navy. It was later known as the Hibernia (1902), the Egmont (1904), the Egremont (1918) and finally the Pembroke (1919). It was sold for scrap in 1925. Mark Milliner appears in the 1871 census, aged 30. Here his occupation is given as shipwright and his placed of birth given as Chatham Kent. He is also then mentioned on the following webpage: http://home.freeuk.com/g7iau/cards/emm.htm ...as being the father of George Milner. The following entry, also from the above webpage, may also relate to him: S/WRIGHT.BETHEL CHAPEL MEMBER.TEACHER IN SUN.SCH.LEAVES WIDOW+5 CHILDREN.SEE 27TH RE FUNERAL.DIED. This seems quite likely to apply to him, as we know he had died by the time of the 1881 census, and we know of five children. He is also mentioned on the following webpage: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~penney/cemetary/cm.htm Here Mark Samuel Milner is listed as having been buried at Halfway cemetery in Sheerness. His age is entered as 39, and the date of his death 25/09/1879. His address is also given - Victory Street - matching the address the remaining family members were residing at during the 1881 census. Here his occupation is entered as shipwright. |
Wife:
Sarah Rickwood Born: 1839 Died: 12-Apr-1922 Father: James Rickwood Mother: Sarah Rickwood Sarah's maiden name is taken from her son George's birth certificate. There is an entry in the GRO indices for the birth of a Sarah Rickwood in Oct/Nov/Dec 1839 in Sheppey (volume 5, page 405 or perhaps 406). Aged 31 at the time of the 1871 census. Her birthplace is recorded as Sheerness, Kent. Aged 41 at the time of the 1881 census, where she is entered as head of the household, her birthplace is recorded as Sheerness Kent. Aged 51 at the time of the 1891 census, where she is again entered as head of the household, and her birthplace is again entered as Sheerness. Her occupation reads something like "mangling wash". Here her marital status is entered as Widow. Aged 61 at the time of the 1901 census, once more her birthplace is recorded as Sheerness. At this time she is living at 52 Berridge Rd with her daughter Florence and a boarder named James Phillips. The following page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~penney/cemetary/bm.htm Listing people buried at Halfway Cemetery (presumably in or near Sheerness), has an entry which is very likely to match Sarah. Here the date of death is given as 12/04/1922, and her age is entered as 83. This fits perfectly with the year Sarah was born in. The page also gives an adress - 1 Strode Crescent - presumably the last address Sarah lived at. |
Child 1:
Elizabeth Sarah Milner Born: 7-Dec-1862 Died: 27-Aug-1950 Spouse: Charles Cousins Hare Children: Florence Hare, Louie Hare, Charles Hare Occupation: Music teacher Aged 8 at the time of the 1871 census, where her occupation is entered as scholar, and her place of birth Chatham, Kent. Aged 18 at the time of the 1881 census, her birthplace is recorded as Chatham, Kent. Aged 38 at the time of the 1901 census, her birthplace is recorded again as Chatham, Kent. Although listed in the 1881 census as "Elizabeth E. Milner", this may have been a transcription error, as there is strong reason to suggest her middle name was Sarah. There is a record of a birth on 7th December 1862 at Saint Paul, Chatham, Kent for an Elizabeth Sarah Milliner in the IGI. The christening took place on the 6th February 1863. There is also an entry in the GRO indices for Oct/Nov/Dec 1862 for the birth of an Elizabeth Sarah Millner (Medway, volume 2a page 384). Medway is the district which covers Chatham. |
Child 2:
Jane Milner Born: 1866 Died: Spouse: Charles Edward Jacobs Children: Charles M. Jacobs, Albert E. Jacobs, Eva E. Jacobs, Frank E. Jacobs Jane only seems to appear with her parents in the 1871 census, aged 4. Her birthplace is recorded as Sheerness. A Jane Milner, aged 14, appears in the 1881 census working as a servant (nurse?) in the household of Herbert Masters on 13 Alma Road in Minster. Here her place of birth is entered as Minster, but this may have just been assumed to be the same as the other household members. Mark and Sarah's three daughters (Elizabeth, Jane and Florence) are referred to as Mrs. Hare, Mrs. Jacobs and Mrs. Phillips. So it appears Jane married a Mr. Jacobs. An entry appears in the GRO indices for the marriage of a Jane Milner, in Jul/Aug/Sep 1889 in Sheppey Kent (volume 2a page 1416). On the same page appears a Charles Edward Jacobs. One Jane Jacobs appears in the 1891 census, living with husband Charles. Her age is entered as 24, and her place of birth Sheppey. Jane Jacobs appears again in the 1901 census, her age entered as 35, and her place of birth again entered as Sheppey. |
Child 3:
George Milner Born: 18-Mar-1871 Died: Spouse: Emily Leech Children: Dorothy Milner, George Milner, Marjorie Milner Occupation: Grocer There is an entry in the GRO indices for Apr/May/Jun 1871 for the birth of a George Milliner (Sheppey, volume 2a, page 753). I have a copy of the birth certificate now. George was born on 18th March 1871 at the family's home - 8 Bell Alley, Mile Town, Sheerness. An unnamed male infant, 1 month old, is entered in the 1871 census in his parent's household. This is almost certainly George. This would indicate George was probably born in March of that year (the birth certificate confirms this). Aged 10 at the time of the 1881 census (where is name is spelt Milner), at which time he was living with his mother, brother, and two sisters. A 20 year old George Milner, born in Sheerness, Kent, appears in the 1891 census, but this time living in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. His occupation is recorded as Grocer's Assistant, and seemingly he is living with his employer at 77, Berkhamsted Road, Chesham. His marital status was entered as single. His occupation, age, and place of birth do seem consistent. His location is a little inconsistent with other information, but it is quite possible he may have moved around a bit, perhaps to find work. Furthermore, after some pretty extensive searching of the 1891 census, their don't seem to be any othe entries which are anywhere close. By 1893, the year of his marriage to Emily, he had seemingly moved to Camberwell, Surrey. At the time of the Dorothy's birth, March 1894, George's occupation was again recorded as Grocer's Assistant. Aged 30 at the time of the 1901 census (where is name is spelt Milner). His place of birth is recorded as Kent Sheerness. His occupation is recorded as being Grocers Assistant. Mentioned on the following webpage: http://home.freeuk.com/g7iau/cards/emm.htm The text reads: NATIVE OF SHEERNESS. DIED AT PORTSMOUTH.SON OF MARK SAMUEL & MRS.SON/LAW=CHARLES HARE.SIS=MRS JACOBS & MRS PHILLIPS. SEE 14THDIED There may be an error here - it seems likely "SON/LAW=CHARLES HARE" should really say brother in law instead. George was present at his daughter Dorothy's wedding, in 1916, so must have lived at least until the age of 55. His occupation as entered on Basil and Dorothy's marriage certificate is a little hard to read, but may be "grocers manager". It seems likely he moved to Portsmouth at some time after 1901. |
Child 4:
Alfred Milner Born: 1875 Died: Spouse: Children: There is an entry in the GRO indices for Apr/May/Jun 1875 for the birth of an Alfred Milliner (Sheppey, volume 2a page 792). Aged 5 at the time of the 1881 census. His birthplace was recorded as Sheerness, Kent. At the time of the 1891 census, aged 15, he is living with his mother and his occupation is entered as Milkman. By the time of the 1901 census, he appears to have left the family home. An Alfred Milner, aged 26, appears in the 1901 census as a lodger in a lodging house in London (97 Old Street). Although his place of birth is entered as London this may have been an error, as many of the other lodgers are somewhat routinely entered as having been born in London. His occupation is hard to read, but could well be Milkman, fitting with the earlier entry. One census transcription has this entry transcribed with the occupation as "Mason". As part of the form is obscured, either could esily fit. |
Child 5:
Florence Ada Milner Born: 1879 Died: Spouse: James William Phillips Children: James Milner Phillips, Victor Phillips Occupation: Draper's Assistant There is an entry in the GRO indices for the birth of a Florence Ada Milliner in Jul/Aug/Sep 1879 in Sheppey (volume 2a, page 847). Aged 1 at the time of the 1881 census, hir birthplace was recorded as Sheerness, Kent. Here her name is entered as "Florence A. Milner", so her surname is spelt Milner rather than Milliner. Aged 11 at the time of the 1891 census, she is to be found living with her mother. Here her name is entered as "Florence Ada Milner". Aged 21 at the time of the 1901 census, again her birthplace is recorded as Sheerness. At this time she is still living with her mother, and her occupation is recorded as draper's assistant. Again her surname is spelt Milner rather than Milliner. An entry on the following page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~penney/cemetary/bm.htm May relate to Florence. Here the name is entered as MILNE(S?) FLORENCE NELLIE, not a perfect match, but the age (34) together with the date of death (02/04/1913) could well be a match. Her address is entered as 18 MARINE PARADE. |
