William Edward Jewell and Angelina Elcock

Married 1890

An entry in the GRO indices for Jul/Aug/Sep 1890 records a William Edward Jewell, as well as an Angelina Elcock (Romsey, volume 2c, page 147).

Interestingly, one Angelius Elcock was also married in the same quarter.

At the time of the 1891 census, the couple are living at 38 High Street, Widley, Cosham.

At the time of the 1901 census, the couple are living with their five children at 108 Kingston Road, Portsmouth.

Husband:   William Edward Jewell

Born: 1865
Died:
Father: John Jewell
Mother: Elizabeth Wingham

Occupation: House Carpenter
Aged 6 at the time of the 1871 census.

Age 15 at the time of the 1881 census (implying he was born 1865/1866),  when he lived with his parents.

Aged 25 at the time of the 1891 census, where his surname seems to have been incorrectly indexed as "Javell", as the handwriting is not so clear. Here his occupation is entered as carpenter and his place of birth Romsey.

Aged 34 at the time of the 1901 census (implying he was born 1866/1867), by which time he was the head of the household, living at 108, Kingston Rd, Portsmouth.

His birthplace is recorded as Awebridge, Hampshire in the 1881 census, but Romsey in the 1901 census.

This seems very likely to tie in with a birth record for William Edward Jewell in the GRO indices for Oct/Nov/Dec 1865 (Romsey, volume 2c, page 69).

He appears to have followed in his father's footsteps. In the 1881 census his occupation is recorded as "Carpenter's Assistant", and by 1901 it has become "House Carpenter". At the time of the 1901 census two of his brothers - Charles and Henry - are living with him, so it may be they too are involved in the family business.

Wife:   Angelina Elcock

Born: 1870
Died:
Father: John Elcock
Mother: Sarah Hoskins

First appears in the 1871 census, aged 2, her place of birth entered as Romsey.

She appears in the 1881 census, aged 12, her named spelt with an n. Again her birthplace is recorded as Romsey. At this time she was living with her parents and three elder brothers.

Appears in the 1891 census living with husband William, incorrectly indexed as "Javell", aged 22 and with her birth place recorded as Romsey.

She appears in the 1901 census, aged 31, her named spelt Angelima (with an m). In the GRO index entry relating to (what appears to be) her marriage to William, her name is spelt Angelina (with an n). It isn't clear which is the correct spelling, perhaps she used both, or perhaps this is just down to transcribing errors.

Her birthplace is recorded in the 1901 census as "Romsey Hants".

Female  Child 2:   Mary Jewell

Born: 1894
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

Aged 6 at the time of the 1901 census, her birthplace is recorded as Portsmouth.

Male  Child 3:   Archibald John Jewell

Born: 1896
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

Aged 5 at the time of the 1901 census, his birthplace is recorded as Portsmouth.

This seems likely to tie in with a birth record for an Archibald John Jewell in the GRO indices for Jan/Feb/Mar 1896 (Portsea Island, volume 2b, page 440).

It appears Arch was killed in an air-raid during the second world war.

Male  Child 4:   Percival Jewell

Born: 1902
Died:
Spouse:
Children:

Does not appear in the 1901 census, so is likely to have been born some time afterwards.

This may tie in with a birth record in the GRO indices for a Percival Frank Jewell in the GRO indices for Oct/Nov/Dec 1902 (Portsmouth, volume 2b, page 402).
