Edwin Alfred Leach and Emily Bailes

Married 1872

At the time of the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, the family were living at 105 Warner Road, Camberwell, Surrey. By the time of the 1901 census  the children had left home, and the parents were living with three boarders.

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the marriage of an Edwin Alfred Leech in Chelmsford Essex, Jul/Aug/Sep 1872 (volume 4a page 301). On the same page appears an Emily Bailes.

Husband:   Edwin Alfred Leach

Born: 1849
Died:
Father: William Leech
Mother: Amelia

Occupation: Carpenter
An Edwin A. Leach (indexed as Losch) appears in the 1871 census, living as a lodger in a house in Chelmsford, Essex, with age recorded as 21, and place of birth recorded as Great Baddow. Here his occupation is entered as carpenter.

At the time of the 1881 census, "Edwin A. Leach" appears aged 31. His birthplace is recorded as Gt. Baddow, Essex, and his occupation is entered as carpenter.

At the time of the 1891 census, "Edwin Alfd Leach" appears, aged 41, with his place of birth again recorded as Gt. Baddow, Essex. Again his occupation is entered as carpenter.

At the time of the 1901 census "Edwin A. Leech" appears, aged 51, and with his place of birth recorded as Great Baddow, Essex. As before his occupation is entered as carpenter.

Wife:   Emily Bailes

Born: 1845
Died:
Father:
Mother:

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the birth of an Emily Bailes in Jan/Feb/Mar 1845, in Greenwich (volume 5, page __3).

An Emily Bailes appears in the 1871 census, her age recorded as 25 and her place of birth entered as Greenwich, Kent. Here she is living at 338 Oxford Street, London. This seems to be some kind of commerical establishment - apparently a chemists. There are many other residents at this address, and the head of household (entered as "manager" rather than "head"), one Henry J. Wigg has his occupation entered as "Chemist and Druggist", with several other occupants having the same occupation, and some having their's entered as "Pharmaceutical Chemist". Emily's occupation is entered as "Housemaid Domestic Servant". Incidentally, some of the other occupants of this address have their place of birth recorded as Great Baddow, Essex - the same as Emily's husband Edwin. One wonders if this might be how she met Edwin.

Aged 36 at the time of the 1881 census, her birthplace is recorded as Greenwich, Kent.

Emily appears again in the 1891 census, aged 45, and again in the 1901 census aged 55. Her place of birth is consistent throughout.

Her surname is taken from the (probable) GRO indices entry for her marriage to Edwin.

Female  Child 1:   Emily Leech

Born: 1873
Died:
Spouse: George Milner
Children: Dorothy Milner, George Milner, Marjorie Milner

For a while I thought Emily's maiden name may have been Lyon or Lyons, but having received a copy of her daughter Dorothy's birth certificate, it appears now her surname  at birth was in fact Leech.

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the birth of an Emily Leech in Apr/May/Jun 1873 in Chelmsford, Essex (volume 4a, page 209). This seems consistent with the 1901 census entry.

An Emily Leach (note slightly different spelling) appears in the 1881 census, aged 7, and with a place of birth recorded as Chelmsford, Essex. Here she is living with her family at 105 Warner Road, Camberwell, Surrey.

The same Emily Leach appears in the 1891 census, aged 17, with a place of birth again recorded as Chelmsford, Essex. Again she is living with her family at 105 Warner Road, Camberwell, Surrey.

Emily was aged 27 at the time of the 1901 cenus, and her birthplace was recorded as Essex Chelmsford.

Female  Child 2:   Eliza Leach

Born: 1874
Died:
Spouse: Ernest Kemp
Children: Ernest Kemp

Occupation: Dressmaker
Aged 6 at the time of the 1881 census, her birthplace is recorded as Chelmsford, Essex.

Aged 16 at the time of the 1891 census, her birthplace is again recorded as Chlemsford, and her occupation is entered as dressmaker.

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the marriage of an Eliza Leech in Oct/Nov/Dec 1896 in Camberwell, Surrey (volume 1d page 1377). It seems quite a likely match. On that page also appears an "Ernest Kemp" and a "Thomas George Cummings". Somehow Ernest seems like the most likely potential husband.

This seems to be substantiated by an entry in the 1901 census. A 26 year old Eliza Kemp, married to Ernest Kemp appears with a place of birth entered as Chelmsford, Essex.
