Clifford Donovan Bentley and Gladys Isabel Hawkins

Married 1917

There is an entry for thr marriage of Gladys I. Hawkins to a Mr Bentley in the GRO indices for Oct/Nov/Dec 1917 (volume 2b page 1223). In the Bentley section for that quarter a Clifford D. Bentley is listed as having married a Hawkins.

A Mr and Mrs. Bentley were mentioned as son and daughter and law in the article about Vernon's funeral.

The couple were known to have lived in Loughborough at some time, perhaps near to Clifford's birthplace.

Husband:   Clifford Donovan Bentley

Born: 1893

Clifford was apparently known by his middle name - Don for short. He bred chrysanthemums for a living (or perhaps this was just a hobby). There is a Bentley trophy which has something to do with chrysanthemum breeding, and I wonder if there might have been some connection. Gladys' uncle Herbert was also involved in horticulture apparently, I think this is probably pure coincidence, but it's nice to think if Clifford and Herbert had met (which they must have done, at the very least both of them attended Vernon's funeral) they would have had something in common to talk about.

There is an entry in the GRO indices for a Clifford Donovan Bentley born in Jul/Aug/Sep 1893 in Leicester (volume 7a page 307).

Wife:   Gladys Isabel Hawkins

Born: 1898
Died:
Father: Vernon John Charles Hawkins
Mother: Mary Jane Hogan

Recorded as being age 3 at the time of the 1901 census, and recorded as having been born in "Hants Portsmouth".

There are two possible birth records with which this may tie in.

The first is a Gladys Rose Hawkins    recorded in the GRO index for Jul/Aug/Sep 1897 as having been born in the district of Fareham (volume 2b page 562). As her older brother Vernon seems to have been born in Fareham it is possible the family lived in that district at some time.

The second is a Gladys Isabel Hawkins in the Apr/May/Jun 1898 indices for Portsea (volume 2b page 500). Although this does not fit quite so well with the age as recorded in the census, the place probably does fit better.

The second record seems more likely, given the entry for a marriage between one Gladys I. Hawkins and a Mr Bentley in the GRO indices for Oct/Nov/Dec 1917 (volume 2b page 1223). A Mr and Mrs. Bentley were mentioned as son and daughter and law in the article about Vernon's funeral.

There is an entry in the England and Wales Civil Registration Death Index: 1993-2002 for a Gladys Isabel Bentley, who died in 1993, aged 95. Here her date of birth is recorded as 18th March 1898. (Carlisle, Cumbria, B43E, 73, registered January 1994)

Male  Child 1:   Cragie Bentley

Died:

Cornelia told me Clifford and Gladys had just one son, called Cragie (not sure how to spell this - Craigie? Creggie?), who apparently died in the second world war.

It is possible Cragie is the middle name of his uncle Horace. Not sure whether there is any connection here.
