Dr John Hawkins
Welcome to my bit of the Maison de Stuff,
home to a huge load of pictures,
and my daily blog.
My email address is as above - I've put it in an image in a vein attempt to reduce the amount of spam I get.

- Over the last few weeks I've been making changes to my pictures page to try and automate it all a bit. I've written my own set of scripts to manage a sort of XML database of all the sets of pictures. From this set of information I can then publish the index to all my sets of pictures in several (currently four) different flavours. At the moment I've got a text only page, a text and pictures page, and a pictures only, as well as the seemingly obligatory RSS feed. Like most people I have wondered what the whole fuss over XML was about at various times. Stuff like this though makes it seem worthwhile. I have a simple form to fill in every time I upload a new set of pictures, and then after that all of the different indices are rebuilt automatically. Very satisfying.

- I'm currently undertaking the task of trying to move all of my pictures onto the 'Maison. Back in the days before Jon set us up with our own domain, I used to use all manner of free web hosting packages to get pictures onto the web. These sorts of companies have since developed habits like deleting your webspace without telling you, or suddenly informing you that you're going to be charged if you want to continue using them. Not to mention the fact that your lovingly hand crafted web content gets littered with banners and popups. Or the fact that they're usually painfully slow. The old saying along the lines of "there's no such thing as a free lunch" could just as easily apply to websites. Those days are over now though. Thanks to my new ADSL connection, this sort of bulk transfer is now possible, and we can continue to enjoy pictures from yesteryear, in the comfort of our own 'Maison.
