John De Viell and Ann

There seems to be some difficulty in writing the family's name - it is often indexed incorrectly (for example Deviell).

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the marriage of a John Deviell in Jul/Aug/Sep 1843 is St Thomas, Devon (volume 10 page 337). There are several other names on the page, including one Ann Webber.

At the time of the 1851 census, the family's address seems to be something like Exwick Village, St. , St. Thomas Apost, Devon. At this time two ladies are lodging with the family - Ann Davey, 21, a dressmaker, and Ann Bennet, 31 a silverer (?).

At the time of the 1861 census, the family's address seems to be something like Exwick, St. Thomas' Apostle, Devon.

At the time of the 1871 census, the family address is Exwick, St. Thomas.

At the time of the 1891 census, the family were living at 17, Follett Buildings, St. Mary Major, Exeter.

John seems to be missing from the 1851 census when he would have been aged about 34 or 35, despite the rest of his family being there.

Aged 44 at the time of the 1861 census. Here his name is entered as John Jr. His occupation is entered as mason, and his place of birth Devon, Bradninch.

Aged 55 at the time of the 1871 census, his place of birth is entered as Bradninch. His occupation is entered as Mason.

His age appears to have been entered as 75 at the time of the 1891 census. Here his place of birth is entered as Devon Bradninch. His occupation is entered as Mason and his marital status widowed.

Aged 85 at the time of the 1901 census, his place of birth is entered as "Devon, Bradninch", and his occupation entered as "retired mason".

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the death of a John De Viell aged 85, in Jul/Aug/Sep 1901 in St. Thomas, Devon (volume 5b, page 35).

There are two mentions in the census returns for another John Deviell who is likely to be John's father. John Deviell (senior) appears in both the 1851 cenus (aged 68) and in the 1871 census (aged 78), at both times living in Exwick, St. Thomas.

Aged 29 at the time of the 1851 cenus, her place of birth is entered as South Molton.

Aged 39 at the time of the 1861 census, her place of birth is given as South Molton.

Aged 50 at the time of the 1871 census, her place of birth is entered as  South Molton.

There is an entry in the GRO indices for the death of an Ann De Viell, aged 70, in Jul/Aug/Sep 1890 in St Thomas Devon (volume 5b, page 40).
