Black Winter Truffle and Gosset

Posted on 2016/02/03 22:11:23 (February 2016).

[Wednesday 27th January 2016]
I had a craving for truffles this week - probably because it had been bonus day at work on Monday, and (see tomorrow's post for a fuller and more nauseatingly introspective monologue on the subject) it always feels like a crushing anti-climax after all that hard work, and I find a bit of mindless extravagance helps take the edge off.

So I popped out at lunchtime to do a bit of shopping at Fortnum and Mason. They had both white and black (winter) truffles there, but since I read somewhere that January is the tail end of the white truffle season, and they were unlikely to be at their best, I opted for black. As it happened though the chap behind the counter rang it up as a white truffle. I didn't notice that was what he'd done initially, and it's an interesting bit of social observation that, it being Fortnum's, I felt compelled to stoically pretend to be unfazed by the price of what seemed like far and away the worst value black truffle I'd ever bought. I then walked round the store for a few minutes, and once I'd confidently determined it was definitely an error I took it back and they corrected the price.

Also got my hair cut by Philip at Briggs, who I believe turns 94 in a couple of weeks time. We had more or less the same conversation we always do, but in addition he was rightly proud of having just received a lifetime achievement award at a ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel the night before.

So tagliatelle with black winter truffles and a bottle of Gosset for dinner, which all turned out rather well.
