Empty DesksPosted on 2011/08/07 10:18:39 (August 2011). [Thursday 4th August 2011]
We're in the process of reshuffling where people sit at work, and some people have moved to a different building altogether, so this week there was an entire empty floor in my office. Of late I've found my proper assigned desk quite a frustrating place to try and get anything done - I'm rather hemmed in there, it's almost constantly noisy, and I get continuously interrupted. Anyone who writes software for a living will know how hard it can be to make progress without sustained periods of concentration.
So, this week I took advantage of the fact there was a whole empty floor, and went and worked there for most of the week. Luckily I can be reasonable productive with only my laptop, so I had already got into the habit of occasionally going to find a quiet corner of the office to hide in if I needed to get something done. Better still, the virtue of an entirely empty floor meant I could pick the best desk, and so spent a lot of this week sitting by the biggest window, with lots of natural light, and plenty of peace and quiet.
Went out for noodles for lunch - which was nice, but seemed to give me a stomach ache afterwards. I don't think I'll go there again for a while. In the evening I made pasta for dinner, with an imaginary peasant-ish sauce of dried porcini and beans. It tasted satisfyingly rustic.
