Android Phone and Christmas Shopping

Posted on 2008/12/26 18:39:28 (December 2008).

[Saturday 20th December]
Fittingly I am writing today's entry with my new Android phone, which also means I'll be keeping it short as I'm not yet that adept with the little keyboard.

So, a brief summary of today:

A) Got my hair cut. As always it was somewhat overdue.

B) I got myself a new G1 - the first phone to use Google's Android platform. I am really impressed with it - by far the best web browsing experience I've ever had on a mobile (I.e. really genuinely usable) and all the maps stuff is really impressive.

C) Had a late lunch at a vegetarian restaurant called Tibits. It was a serve yourself buffet place, but rather than the usual guilt inducing eat as much as you can paradigm, you put what you want on on your plate and then pay by weight. All the dishes on offer were very tasty and interesting too.

D) Did some more Christmas shopping, mainly at Fortnum and Mason.

John: I need info on the Android phones... I am toying with the idea of buying one, but I wanted to know more about them, and since you have one maybe you could give me some first hand experiences?

John: first of all how does it work? I mean, we know how cool and nice is the Iphone system, but it's also a closed, and that it's not that great. Can you put any sim in the android phone? What is your impression from using it compared to Symbian or Windows Mobile?

Hmmm I don't know about other countries, but in the UK the G1 is currently only available through T-Mobile, and as the phone comes for free with an 18 month contract I guess it is locked. However I think unlocked handsets are available, but without a decent data plan from your mobile operator it probably wouldn't really be worth having, and I guess you'd only get that sort of data plan with a contract anyway.
