Friday 27th December 2002 (Index...)

14:02:13 This is taken in a "family restaurant", part of the huge Sogo department store in Hiroshima.

14:02:34 The background to this picture is frustratingly pale! Still can't seem to get the settings right on this camera.

14:08:16 Still messing about with the camera and new tripod...

14:14:42 Me and my lunch. I particularly enjoyed the shoga tempura - deep fried ginger in batter. Very nice indeed.

14:22:02 Chie eating ramen.

16:00:24 After lunch we made a vague plan to go down to Hiroshima port and catch a boat to somewhere or other. This was a boat we didn't manage to catch...

16:00:54 Off it goes...

16:01:49 Chie waiting patiently on the quayside.

16:03:47 As it was fairly late on in the afternoon, the sun was just starting to set, and so my camera was subjected to an ongoing ordeal of trying to get nice sunset over the sea type of pictures...

16:06:14 ..with a sprinkling of boats and so on...

16:13:59 I also rather liked the stark outline this crane made against the sky...

16:15:04 I guess we must be on the boat now then. I was very impressed with the consistency in Japanese efficiency. Even ferries, with all the unpredictability of the sea to contend with, seem to be impressively punctual.

16:16:04 I think I will soon give up trying to say anything intelligent about these sky/sea pictures, as there are just too many!

16:18:12 Chie slightly silhoutted against the backdrop.

16:18:52 I rather like this profile shot of me, taken by Chie.

16:18:57 Hmmm perhaps this one is a bit too dark...

16:19:09 The clouds were certainly very photogenic...

16:21:42 I loved the way all of the boats seemed to lazily tootle along in the distance.

16:23:49 I was testing the zoom. Not bad in the end, as this boat was a fair way off.

16:26:36 The sky now beginning to take on even more dramatic proportions.

16:28:49 I like the layered effect of the mountains on the horizon in the middle of this picture, and the way the smoke and steam from the ships is highlighted by the sun.

16:49:04 On Etajima now, which is famous for satsumas. Chie wanted an opportunity for a spot of oggy raiding, but this was the closest we ever got to any suitable trees.

16:50:49 This, a fairly large and well stocked off license (that's a liquor store for our American counterparts) seemed to be the only notable shop on the island. Fantastic!

17:05:33 Well, we wanted to get back to Hiroshima, so we made it a flying visit. Here's our ride home coming into the little harbour on Etajima.

17:15:10 On the way back to the mainland, I became obsessed with trying to get a good picture of that sunset...

17:15:21 ...however my camera seemed very reluctant to reproduce the colours faithfully...

17:17:19 ...this still isn't quite what we saw with our eyes...

17:17:43 Part of the problem was perhaps that it was cold, the ferry was vibrating, and I don't have very steady hands. So it was difficult to get a sharp picture.

17:18:10 Hmmm very blurred this time.

17:18:37 Oh well, I remembered how great it looked, even if the pictures don't really do it justice!

17:41:25 After getting off the ferry I got this fairly pleasing shot using the tripod of the harbour lights and the last glowing remnants of the sunset.

17:47:06 One of the older trams that go between Hiroshima port and Hiroshima city.

21:56:50 After our brief maritime expidition, we decided to eat out in Hiroshima. Here we are in a very nice Italian restaurant called Monte Tina, which we'd been to on my first visit also.

21:57:28 Chie apparently didn't want her picture taken!
