Marion Marshall Female

Born: 1837
Died:

Comments: At the time of her marriage to John in 1863, Marion's age is entered as 27.

At the time of the 1871 census (where she appears to have been entered as "Mary") her age is given as 36, and her place of birth Portsea, Hants.

Her age was recorded as 43 at the time of the 1881 census (3rd April 1881). This would suggest she was born between 4th April 1837 and 3rd April 1838. Her place of birth was entered as Portsea. The place is probably consistent with the 1901 entry, as administrative districts changed around the corner of the century.

Her age was recorded as 54 at the time of the 1891 census.

Marion's age was recorded as being 64 at the time of the 1901 census (31st March 1901) , which would suggest she was born between 1st April 1836 and 31st March 1837. Her place of birth was entered as "Hants Portsmouth".

Of course either or both of these could be wrong, but overall it seems more likely she was born in 1837.

Her surname is taken from her son Vernon and her daughter Eva's birth certificate. Interestingly, on Eva's birth certificate, the mother's name is first written as Mary Ann, and then crossed out, and written again as Marion.

Marion's Family

Spouse: John Hawkins (Married 16-Jun-1863)
Children: Blanche Isabel Hawkins, Vernon John Charles Hawkins, Harry Frederick Hawkins, Eva Gertrude Hawkins
The couple's marriage is recorded in the GRO indices for Apr/May/Jun 1863 in Portsea (volume 2b page 763).

I have a copy of the marriage certificate. They were married in St. Paul's, Portsea on 16th June 1863. The marriage was witnessed by Charles and Mary R. Rogers.

At time of their son Vernon's birth, 1867, the family lived at 12 Buckingham Street, Landport, Portsea Island.

The family are still living at 12, Buckingham Street at the time of the 1871 census.

At the time of their daugher Eva's birth, 1874, the family's address appears to be  Fratton Grove, Fratton.

At the time of the 1881 census, the family lived at 4, Gresham Buildings, Portsea.

At the time of the 1891 census, the family lived at 3, Villiers Road, Portsmouth. Three of the four children were living at home at this time, whilst Vernon was living on Guernsey. At this point they had two boarders living with them - one Alice A Shaw (aged 25) and a William E Grant (aged 26. Both have their occupation entered as teacher. They may have been Blanche's colleagues.

By the time of the 1901 census the family were living at 5, Villiers Road Portsmouth. Presumably three of the four children had left home by this point, but Eva was still there (or she had left home and later returned).
