Chepstow and Avebury in the Dark
Monday 20th December 2021
Left the Wye Valley in the morning and drove down to Chepstow to meet Bec and Jessica. In the afternoon we drove to Abingdon to drop the girls off with friends they'd be staying with for the night, and I then motored on to Avebury for the eve of the Winter Solstice.

Jessica and Erika at the tearoom where we went for tea before lunch.

11:19:19
Tried to get a picture of our table but Erika and I are only slightly in it!

12:09:53
The girls in front of Chepstow Castle.

12:15:16
More of Chepstow Castle.

13:29:30
Lunch at an Italian restuarant in Chepstow.

18:28:51
After dropping the girls off in Abingdon, my room at the Bed and Breakfast near Avebury where I'd be staying tonight.

18:57:57
I walked from the bed and breakfast in East Kennet to Avebury. I had a torch with me which proved quite handy as it was pretty dark by now.

West Kennet Avenue on the approach to Avebury.

19:15:49
More stones in the dark.

19:17:15

19:24:36
The torch helped out quite a lot with taking photos of the stones.

19:30:15
On arrival at Avebury - nobody here!

19:32:16
The stones at Avebury.

19:33:25

19:40:32
Oh well. I was a bit disappointed to find nobody else here, but thought I'd crack on and have a glass of wine regardless.

20:41:51
More stones in the gloom.

20:43:03
The Red Lion looked tempting, but I decided to do more walking instead of going in.

20:46:01
The track heading east(ish) out of Avebury.

20:57:42
A muddy bridleway which would connect with the Ridgeway.

21:09:28
I noticed a lot of these permissive footpath signs around Avebury on this visit - these aren't marked on the OS map, and it seems the only way to know where they are is to be here.

21:20:02
A triangular piece of stone.

21:21:23
A sarsen.

21:30:30
The hedgehogs, near the Ridgeway.

21:34:47
These are barrows / tumuli with clumps of trees on top.

21:35:38
I stopped at this one to sit for a while and have a glass of wine.

21:40:04

21:40:43
Selfie in the dark.

21:43:06
Nice silhouette of branches in the moonlight between these two trees.

21:51:15
Another selfie helped by the torch light.

21:59:34
On the Ridgeway now - back in the summer there had been camper vans all along here, but tonight only a handful right at the end by the road.

22:03:55
Looks like somebody had a camp fire here. Envious.

22:05:49
More of the Ridgeway, and you can just about see the lights of the few campervans there were down at the end.

22:06:13
The moon occasionally poked through the clouds, but it was hard to catch it in a photo.

22:07:47

22:13:31
At The Sanctuary now.

22:18:57
The little concrete blocks were handy for providing a flat surface to rest a glass and a bottle on.

22:21:34

22:27:13
Night Sight shot making it look a lot lighter than it really was.

22:31:18
Not sure why I took a video here.

22:31:44
Selfie using Night Sight again giving the impression it was a lot lighter than it really was.

23:06:43
Heading back towards East Kennet now - another tumulus beside the path.

23:10:56
Moonlight through the branches.

A wall in East Kennet.

23:21:39
Nearly back at the bed and breakfast now.
