Finishing the Wessex Ridgeway
Thursday 4th August 2022
The final push to complete my walk along the Wessex Ridgeway. I made it to Lyme Regis by lunchtime, and from there took a bus and a train to Starcross to visit Dad.

A very early start! I think I managed at best 3 hours of actual sleep. Around first light here.

04:50:50
Obviously being in a wooded area meant a fairly limited view of the sky, but I quite liked the pre-dawn sky is framed by the silhouette of the trees here.

04:51:17
Rather dark picture showing bivvy / tarp setup.

05:14:51
Slightly less dark (and slightly less messy!) photo of my bivvy bag plus tarp.

05:15:05

05:25:28
Somewhere beyond those trees is probably a rather attractive sunrise!

05:51:39
Heading out of the woods, and looking back to the sunrise.

06:00:24
Back out in the open now, and it seems lke fully daylight already.

06:01:26
Fairly sure the sun has officially risen now.

06:37:00

06:51:39
A bit of a slog from Lewesdon Hill to here, Pilsdon Pen, but this was a spectacular spot. Would have been lovely to have been here at sunrise given the wide open views, but never mind!

06:51:50
In my stupid sun hat, which makes me look like a bit of a yokel here, because it was already quite sunny even at this time of the morning.

06:59:53
Heading down to the road from Pilsdon Pen. I decided to cheat quite a lot from here on, and followed the road from here to the next landmark along thr route - Lambert's Castle. The road was a much more direct route than the Wessex Ridgeway took between the two.

08:27:57
At Lambert's Castle now, and I found a much appreciated bench to have a sit down on.

09:05:46
Although I had met up with the Wessex Ridgeway again at Lambert's Castle, had I followed it the rest of the way to Lyme Regis it would once again have been a very indirect route. So I took another shortcut, but this time rather than a trudge along a road, I found a rather lovely old track.

09:05:53
The track was relatively flat, nice and shady and tree lined - I was very pleased with my short cut here.

09:21:23
After the track my short cut took me along a pleasant (i.e. mostly devoid of cars) road through an area of woodland.

09:25:17
This also made for rather pleasant walking actually.

10:14:12
Once again after my shortcut I rejoined the Wessex Ridgeway, then had quite a slog up Penn Hill, which I found rather hard work. However I was at least rewarded with this pleasant view.

10:18:24
Another one of those very English vistas I thought.

10:29:27
Just after crossing the A35, this sign appeared to suggest it was only 2 3/4 miles from here to Lyme Regis. The remainder of the walk felt a fair bit longer than that!

11:45:40
The difference between this and the previous photos seems to suggest it took me an hour and a quarter to walk less than two miles. I did have a rather overgrown bit of woodland (Hole Common) to battle through, and I did have a break there to take my boots off for a bit, but I'm still very sceptical of these distances.

12:15:22
Anyway, finally Lyme Regis! I stopped at the first shady bench I came to and had a proper sit down for a bit. My feet were really feeling it at this point!

12:49:45
Lyme's Fish Bar, which gave the impression of being the place to go for fish and chips (or vegetarian versions thereof) in Lyme Regis.

13:00:33
My celebtratory pie and chips for lunch.

13:00:55
Sat by the harbour wall, where I declared victory. Albeit with a few shortcuts, I had completed my walk along the Wessex Ridgeway. From here I took a bus to Axminster, then a train (well actually two trains) from there to Starcross to see Dad. It seems I didn't take any photos for the rest of the day!
