Sightseeing in Seattle

Saturday 5th November 2005

A day spent doing touristy stuff in Seattle, despite the terrible weather.

Saturday 05 November
12:03
Me sat on the monorail, going from the Westlake Center to the Space Needle.

Saturday 05 November
12:05
Yes, that would be the Space Needle then!

Saturday 05 November
12:15
A sign inside the "O Deck" of the Space Needle posing the question "How many inches of rain does Seattle get in one year?" Quite a lot, if today was anything to go on.

Saturday 05 November
12:17
A very rainy (no doubt typical) view out over Seattle.

Saturday 05 November
12:17
Another view of Seattle from a different angle.

Saturday 05 November
12:17
A boat plane, probably quite an appropriate thing for flying with in this sort of weather!

Saturday 05 November
12:20
A rather dismal view out over Seattle through the railings.

Saturday 05 November
12:25
When in Rome... The elevator attendant on the way up rather amusingly quipped "There's a Starbucks at the top, which I believe to be the only one in Seattle." No doubt the humour in this statement has long ago died out for the poor guy who goes through this routine several hundred times a day, but as a first timer it was certainly funny to me.

Saturday 05 November
12:34
A first attempt to get a picture of me and Atsushi-san at the top, which was rather unsuccessful.

Saturday 05 November
12:46
Another one which came out a little better...

Saturday 05 November
12:47
...the third attempt in which you can actually see us!

Saturday 05 November
12:49
Another rainy view out over Seattle...

Saturday 05 November
12:51
...and another, possibly taken from the elevator on the way down.

Saturday 05 November
13:11
Lunch in the food court in the Westlake Center. I had this exceptionally cheap burrito (3 dollars or so) which wasn't bad at all whilst Atushi-san opted for something sort of South East Asian.

Saturday 05 November
13:49
The outside bit of Pike Place Market, as with everywhere else in Seattle today, looking very rainswept!

Saturday 05 November
14:27
The guy with the hammer outside Seattle Art Museum.

Saturday 05 November
14:38
There he is again. We toyed with the idea of going round Seattle Art Museum (largely just to get out of the rain), but decided not to bother in the end.

Saturday 05 November
15:01
One of the day's highlights - we stumbled into this Irish Pub "by accident" whilst looking for a place to buy an umbrella. I don't think Atsushi-san had drank Guinness before, and seemed to quite like it... or maybe he was just too polite to say otherwise!

Saturday 05 November
15:01
Me enjoying an "accidental" pint of Guinness. Ironically we actually managed to get an umbrella in here! (No, we didn't steal it or anything, it was given to us by one of the very nice staff)

Saturday 05 November
16:09
I wanted to take a wholly pointless boat ride, purely for the sake of it. In the end we decided it probably was a bit too pointless and gave up on the idea. So this is a picture down by the harbour.

Saturday 05 November
16:09
From the harbour looking back to the tall buildings in the city centre.

Saturday 05 November
17:11
Back at Pike Place Market, once it had started to get dark.

Saturday 05 November
17:52
I had seen this bar/brewery place in Pike Place last time I had come to Seattle, and as we had no better ideas for dinner we decided to come here...

Saturday 05 November
17:52
...took a couple of random pictures in there of nothing in particular...

Saturday 05 November
17:56
Me, a little blurred, with my "sampler" - a selection of six beers brewed on the premises.

Saturday 05 November
17:56
All of these were very drinkable indeed! I particularly liked their IPA (although it wasn't much like what I am used to in an IPA).

Saturday 05 November
18:12
Not a great picture of my dinner, but this was actually probably the best thing I'd had since coming to America. It was a Portobello Wellington - a big mushroom en croute with goats cheese and some other bits and pieces, jolly nice indeed.

Saturday 05 November
19:02
On the way out, a picture of me and the mash tun.
