A few days spent doing outdoorsy sort of things around Hiroshima.

Sunday 29 May
12:39
On the ferry on the way over to Miyajima, and just for fun there's a rear view mirror in shot as well.

Sunday 29 May
12:40
Chie on the ferry to Miyajima, clearly not that happy about having her picture taken as it may inadvertantly identify her as a tourist.

Sunday 29 May
12:40
Me, a bit dark, on the ferry.

Sunday 29 May
12:43
Another ship off in the distance, which had a wedding party onboard.

Sunday 29 May
12:44
It's pretty much a legal requirement to include at least one picture of Miyajima's tori (shrine gateway thing) in any set of pictures taken in Miyajima.

Sunday 29 May
12:44
Here's the tori again just to make sure.

Sunday 29 May
13:01
Doe: A deer, a female deer...

Sunday 29 May
13:01
A parked deer.

Sunday 29 May
13:01
It is stupid in a way to take pictures of deer on Miyajima as they are so commonplace - it is like taking pictures of trees or lamp posts... and yet I can't seem to stop myself.

Sunday 29 May
13:22
Next to the bay where I was going to go for a swim.

Sunday 29 May
13:52
You really don't want to see this sort of picture do you? Here's me, in the water, an awkward looking gaijin in the Japanese sea.

Sunday 29 May
13:53
Here's me swimming!

Sunday 29 May
13:53
Chie taking a picture of her shadow. Rather a nice ripple effect of the light on the water.

Sunday 29 May
13:53
Me swimming again.

Sunday 29 May
13:54
A slightly closer picture of me swimming, wherein I appear to have adopted some kind of embarassing side parting.

Sunday 29 May
14:16
After I'd finished swimming I retired to the beach, to watch the other people mess about on jet skis, etc. Surprisingly not many other people swimming!

Sunday 29 May
14:18
An excellent advert for Asahi! Particularly fitting as Chie's t-shirt reads "Go with the flow" - a great slogan for a beer advertising campaign if ever I've heard one.

Sunday 29 May
14:35
Very tropical looking!

Sunday 29 May
14:49
Chie having a bit of a paddle.

Sunday 29 May
14:49
Sea, and a small amount of Chie.

Sunday 29 May
14:50
Me having a look at an annoying idiot showing off on a jetski.

Sunday 29 May
14:51
Me standing in the water.

Sunday 29 May
14:51
Chie's feet - the picture seems to have broken a bit though.

Sunday 29 May
14:52
Chie's Dad having a well earned rest on the beach.

Sunday 29 May
14:53
Chie's Mum also having a relaxing time.

Sunday 29 May
15:04
Deer and children playing on the beach... awww....

Sunday 29 May
15:27
Deer and tree.

Sunday 29 May
15:27
Yet another unnecessary picture of a deer.

Sunday 29 May
15:44
Based on my observations, I have determined that the staple diet of Japanese deer is toilet roll.

Sunday 29 May
15:44
Does that taste good?

Sunday 29 May
17:52
Leaving Miyajima now...

Sunday 29 May
17:52
Miyajima's harbour bit...

Sunday 29 May
17:55
Me and Chie's Mum on the ferry.

Monday 30 May
22:51
Spent some time in the evening on Monday studying Japanese, and here are a couple of pictures to prove it. I rather like this one.

Monday 30 May
22:52
Here's another.

Monday 30 May
22:52
Chie wanted to get in a picture too.

Tuesday 31 May
12:14
Chie waiting for a bus to take us to the countryside.

Tuesday 31 May
13:28
After a surprising diversion by way of a shopping centre (?!) we finally got to the sort of country park place on the outskirts of Hiroshima.

Tuesday 31 May
13:29
A close-up of the map, which would supposedly help if we got lost (sod all use to me!).

Tuesday 31 May
13:30
I've actually taken a picture of this exact same shrine before.

Tuesday 31 May
13:31
Chie on the stepping stones.

Tuesday 31 May
13:47
After the first bit of serious uphill walking (which was rather hard work given the temperature) there were some nice views of Hiroshima to be had...

Tuesday 31 May
13:47
...unfortunately it was pretty hazy, so hard to see very clearly.

Tuesday 31 May
13:47
Chie taking a break.

Tuesday 31 May
14:11
Another hazy view out over the trees.

Tuesday 31 May
14:11
Me pointlessly standing on one leg, and sporting my brand new hat, bought specially for this walk, which was a tiny bit too small.

Tuesday 31 May
14:25
A self-timer picture (and thus the bad composition) taken at the spot where we stopped to have lunch.

Tuesday 31 May
14:55
Yet another hazy view taken through the trees.

Tuesday 31 May
14:58
I was intrigued as to why this monkey was here...

Tuesday 31 May
15:01
Taken from a wooden observation platform sort of thing. Really great views from here, but again really hard to see because of the haze. You can see out to the sea here - some of those lumps are islands.

Tuesday 31 May
15:02
I think we can see one of those lumps from Chie's family's flat.

Tuesday 31 May
15:02
The sprawl of Hiroshima.

Tuesday 31 May
15:02
Some kind of bird of prey was circling menacingly above us...

Tuesday 31 May
15:06
This seemed like a good spot for a wee dram, my own personal vatting of Highland Park 18 year old, plus as a "carrier" the Japanese one whose name I have forgotten.

Tuesday 31 May
15:07
Actually despite the hot weather, this was very nice - proving whisky is great for any occasion.

Tuesday 31 May
15:10
An attempt to get an arty picture of my face reflected in my hipflask...

Tuesday 31 May
15:10
...that's a bit better.

Tuesday 31 May
15:44
On the way out of the country park place now - a sign which presumably prohibits frogs from entering. Not sure how the frogs are supposed to read this...

Wednesday 01 June
16:11
Taken in an outlet shopping centre in the port district of Hiroshima. Presumably this is an American store name, but I hadn't seen it before, and obviously I found it rather entertaining.

Wednesday 01 June
16:12
Chie's Dad kindly took a picture of the sign with me in it.

Wednesday 01 June
16:44
To complete the set, just round the corner we found a big Hawkins sign - a manufacturer of shoes seemingly quite popular here in Japan, but somewhat unheard of back in England.

Wednesday 01 June
17:55
Right so here we are in the beer garden, on the roof of Fukuya department store in Hiroshima. For those not familiar with a Japanese beer garden, then the word "garden" may be somewhat misleading. It's effectively just an outdoor nomihodai / tabehodai (eat and drink as much as you want) place. I think this was shortly after we arrived, so things are looking very civilised still...

Wednesday 01 June
17:55
Me and Chie's Dad. Here I've got both the standard ffffuuurrrrrresh nama biru (in this case Asahi) as well as the Asahi black beer... which to me tasted almost exactly the same as the pale one.

Wednesday 01 June
18:51
A view of the throngs to give a general idea what a beer garden looks like.

Wednesday 01 June
18:52
You can never do "kanpai" too many times...

Wednesday 01 June
20:06
Taken through the windows at the edge of the beer garden, from where there were some nice night-time views out over Hiroshima.

Wednesday 01 June
20:06
...although shortly afterwards we were shooed away by the beer garden staff - apparently we weren't supposed to be standing here.

Wednesday 01 June
21:26
I was keen to get a picture of this group of (presumably) university students, who had arrived about the same time as us, and done a really stirling job of staying to the end (err, like us then I suppose!). I used a series of very bad Japanese to explain that I was a tourist and I wanted to take pictures of Japanese people. In England/English this would have sounded very odd indeed, but in Japan this sort of thing seems quite normal somehow - certainly they were very happy to comply.
