Monday in Monaco
Monday 4th September 2017
Went to the Oceanographic Museum (aquarium) towards the end of the morning, and also had lunch there. I failed in an attempt to go to a bar right on the end of the harbour arm in Fontvielle in the afternoon, while the girls transferred to our new hotel at the Eastern end of Monaco. Spent the remainder of the afternoon on the private beach and in the swimming pool at our new hotel, then in the evening went for pizza on the beach at Miami Plage, and were rather spell bound by the full moon.

John's Pictures

08:52:13
The view in the morning from the first of the two hotels we stayed at one this trip, we'd be checking out after breakfast today.

10:26:15

10:40:46
For some reason I viewed in on the sea here. Not sure why.

10:47:38
My ridiculous orange suitcase and the copy of The Chap Magazine I brought with me for some holiday reading material.

11:32:01
On the way to the Oceanographic Museum - it seemed to take ages to get out of our hotel this morning - we stopped off at this playground en route.

11:36:09
Erika investingating various things in the park.

11:38:13

11:38:15

11:42:34
There was also this horse and cart at the edge of the park, which Erika rather took to. I enjoy pictures of me and Erika when I'm wearing a suit and sunglasses, I look like I'm her bodyguard or something.

11:42:38

11:46:30
Took a photo of this place for later reference as I was really keen on this trip to try "specialites Monegasques". Alas we didn't make it back here.

11:46:45
The menu, also for later reference.

12:12:08
On the way up to Le Rocher. That now familiar tree and more views over Monaco.

12:12:14

12:13:12

12:17:53
I'm very fond of this walkway leading up to the palace.

12:20:18
The Prince's Palace.

12:24:11
The Cathedral.

12:25:18
Attempted to take a picture through the trees of Les Perles de Monte Carlo across the harbour, where I was hoping to go later on.

12:28:33
Erika and the yellow submarine outside the Oceanographic Museum. You can just about see she's doing the actions from her school show here.

12:28:41

12:34:26
Inside the Oceanographic Museum. It has some rather nice tall windows.

12:34:45
Nice sea views to be had from here too.

12:39:05
The aquarium part of the Oceanographic Museum.

12:39:15
Silhoettes of Chie and Erika.

12:39:19

12:40:27

12:41:42
A slightly unnerving glass panel in the floor showing the very long drop down to the rocks and eventually the sea beneath.

12:42:20

12:49:47
I thought the amphora were a nice touch.

12:49:52

12:49:55

12:51:53
Turtle.

13:18:29
I had originally hoped we might try lunch at Les Perles de Monte Carlo, but timing made that impractical, so instead we had lunch in the restaurant on the terrace atop the Oceanographic Museum like we did on our last visit. It's actually quite nice here.

13:18:42

13:33:56
Amusingly I had exactly the same pasta dish as I'd had on our previous trip about 3 years ago - tagliatelle with porcini. I enjoyed it both times.

13:33:58

13:34:00

14:06:33
Views from the terrace of the Oceanographic Museum.

14:06:43
Lovely blue sea and sky!

14:06:53

14:08:10

14:10:11
Zoomed in on the Riviera Palace which I was hoping to get a closer look at later on this trip.

14:10:14
The Riviera Palace slightly less zoomed in.

14:17:45
Erika in the wooden submarine in the Oceanographic Museum, we'd taken a picture of her in it 3 years ago.

14:17:51

14:17:56

14:18:03

14:19:24
More of the interior of the Oceanographic Museum.

14:20:53

14:22:21

14:40:14
On leaving the Oceanographic Museum I took another picture of the end of the harbour arm of Fontvielle harbour where Les Perles de Monte Carlo was located - what a fabulous spot!

14:40:28

14:42:09

14:42:32

14:42:36
I was very keen to try and get there!

14:44:51
I like these little remnants of the old fortifications along the top of Le Rocher.

14:46:08

14:47:38
Ye another view of the harbour arm at Fontvielle as I was en route to try and visit Les Perles de Monte Carlo.

15:19:16
...a shot at more or less sea level across the harbour.

15:19:33

15:21:33
Arrived at Les Perles de Monte Carlo having walked for about 40 minutes in the hot sun all the way round the bay from the Oceanographic Museum, which you can see here, to find it was closed.

15:23:02
Although it says it's open 8am to 5pm on the website, that's just for retail sales of seafood I think. The restaurant/bar part is only open at lunchtime.

15:23:47
Such a waste, what a spectacular location! Odd that this terrace area on top of Les Perles de Monte Carlo is just seemingly unused space. There really ought to be a cafe or something here.

15:24:06
Uninterrupted view back to the Oceanographic Museum.

15:24:35

15:25:22

15:25:29

15:25:31

15:25:59
One last picture of Les Perles de Monte Carlo before walking away in defeat. Oh well.

16:30:11
I ended up just walking all the way from there to our next hotel near the Eastern extreme of Monaco, which seemingly took over an hour. On the way I passed this shop selling vintage posters etc.

16:39:08
Passing Larvotto now, so nearly at the hotel.

17:05:10
Erika on the private beach at our hotel.

17:05:25
Me and Erika on the beach.

17:33:58
Chie and Erika lounging by the pool.

17:34:13

17:51:48
The view from our hotel balcony.

17:54:23

18:46:55
On the way to dinner now I think. Black smoke coming out of a yacht in the distance.

18:47:04

18:51:46
Playground on the beach on the way to dinner.

18:53:14

18:54:07

19:11:22
An Aperol Spritz on the beach at Miami Plage, where we had dinner.

19:23:57
Chie and Erika with their pizzas.

19:24:12

19:24:15
We'd been here on our previous trip to Monaco. I thought the pizzas were decent enough last time, but this one was better than I remembered.

19:30:00
Me and Erika larking about.

19:30:09
Nice shot of me and Erika.

19:52:21
Nice bit of slightly pinkish sky as seen from Larvotto beach.

19:52:41

19:53:04

19:54:12
The moon was visible already.

19:54:39
Mainly just testing the zoom on my camera here.

19:54:50
Another yacht.

19:55:24
Trying to take a picture of the moon. Difficult to get it centred at this zoom level!

19:55:31

19:55:54

19:56:04

19:56:11
That's not a bad effort.

20:14:47
Dolphin bins.

20:15:04
Chie and Erika on Larvotto beach on the way back to the hotel.

20:15:11
With the moon reflecting on the sea in the background. Lovely!

20:17:24
More moon sea reflections.

20:32:10
Back in our hotel room now.

20:32:30

20:36:48
Seemed like an appropriate juncture for Champagne on the balcony.

20:37:21

20:49:52
Harder to zoom at night time.

20:55:49
Erika having a bit more pizza before bedtime.

22:21:31
More lunar photography after Erika went to sleep.

22:24:06

22:24:21

22:26:21
...and more attempts to take pictures of the yachts in the bay, which didn't really work.

22:26:29

22:32:05
That's not a bad one.

22:32:15

22:32:27

22:33:15
