Devil's Dyke to Washington
Friday 26th October 2018
The next instalment of my walk along the South Downs Way - this time from the Devil's Dyke to Washington, from where I got the bus to Pulborough, allowing me to recreate what is now becoming a tradition of chips and English sparkling wine on the train on the way home.

Got the train from Kentish Town to Brighton, changing here at Blackfriars. I always love this view from the station, even on grey days like today.

12:32:32
Finally got to the Devil's Dyke (took a taxi from Brighton station). It is a lovely view from here but the weather was not at its best for the start of the walk.

12:39:43
Looks like a lost jumper or something.

12:40:45
I always find the first sight of a South Downs Way signpost reassuring, and here the blue sky is also starting to show through the clouds.

Can see the sea from here.

13:01:43
Those familiar downland chalky tracks.

More reassuring signs.

13:21:45
The sun glistening on the sea in the distance.

Just after crossing the A283, near Botolphs.

13:59:20
I thought something like this might be nice for Erika next summer.

14:05:37
In the tiny village of Botolphs. I thought this pair of cottages were rather appealing.

14:07:15
A little roadside stall selling fruit and vegetables.

14:16:11
A rainbow!

14:16:14

14:17:09
The path passed through a large pig farm for some distance.

The pigs were rather cute but a bit smelly.

14:27:11

14:29:59
Pigs digging for truffles?

14:30:01

14:38:17
Finally beyond the whiff of the pig farm here I think.

Approaching Chanctonbury Ring, apparently the site of some paranormal activity. I just found it a rather peaceful and beautiful spot.

15:30:52
I looked a bit scruffy and windswept here but I was having a delightful time.

15:30:57

15:37:16
Leaving the enigmatic Chanctonbury Ring behind me now.

15:45:29
Starting the descent down into Washington.

15:58:35

16:09:15
I had rather hoped I might be able to fit in a quick pint at The Frankland Arms in Washington while waiting for the bus to Pulborough station - I believe a one time haunt of Hilaire Belloc - but sadly it appears it is currently closed for the forseeable future.

16:09:19

17:18:45
So instead, after getting the bus to Pulborough, I reverted to a tried and tested formula of a bag of chips from the chip shop near the station...

17:22:51

17:25:23
...and a bottle of Nyetimber (the winery being just a mile or two from Pulborough) for the train journey back to London. Bliss!

18:41:52
I rebelliously ignored this sign to charge my phone on the train.
