Epping Forest
Saturday 10th July 2021
Had a surprisingly nice day out, considering we didn't decide what to do until the morning. We drove to Haringey first, for Cig Kofte (a Turkish dish I had been learning about at work recently) and Gozleme for lunch. Then from there we motored to Epping Forest - the first time we'd been there - for a wander around, and a coffee / hot chocolate break in Loughton Camp, a Bronze Age hill fort.

Cig Kofte - which literally means "raw meatball", but this is the began version made from (I believe) bulgur wheat and various spices. They may look a little odd but they were actually quite delicious, although not easy to eat in the car.

13:07:04
Here's the three of us with our Turkish food, which we ate in the car: both items were from takeaway places and there weren't many other seating options in the immediate vicinity. Erika here is having a spinach and feta gozleme. Not in shot here are the various accoutrements for the cig kofte - a half head of lettuce, some lavash wraps, some lemon wedges, some fresh mint, fresh parsley and a little pot of pomegranate (?) sauce. I think the idea was that you build your own wraps adding as much of each ingredient as you liked.

13:44:10
We had to drive through some rather dreary parts of London to get from Haringey to Epping Forest.

13:55:32
More grim roadside scenes.

14:24:12
...and here we are on arrival in Epping Forest.

14:24:22
The girls looking happy to be in the woods.

14:25:18

14:26:27
Erika climbing a tree.

14:28:23
Are these bramble flowers? Surprisingly pretty.

14:34:20
A very knobbly tree stump.

14:39:25
Loads of fungi all over Epping Forest - apparently more than 1600 species.

14:41:30
Also a nice surprise was the number of streams and little valleys that helped keep the landscape varied and interesting.

14:54:51
A crab apple tree.

14:56:41
One of the many streams which wind their way through Epping Forest.

15:04:51
Onto a more established track for a bit.

15:05:18
Some very characterful beech (?) trees.

15:05:35
This mushroom seemed to have just emerged from the soil - I thought it might possibly be some kind of bolete, but I couldn't get a good view of the underside of the cap to confirm, and didn't want to disturb it.

15:09:47
These look a bit like puffballs, but were quite small.

15:09:53

15:13:22
Entering Loughton Camp now.

15:23:04
We stopped for a while in Loughton Camp, for a coffee / hot chocolate break.

15:23:10

15:26:40
I laid down my poncho tarp as a ground sheet and we sat here for a while having our coffee / hot chocolate.

15:26:46
It was rather lovely.

15:33:44
The girls with their hot drinks.

15:35:46
The three of us with our hot drinks.

15:57:19
Our little "camp" in Loughton Camp.

16:00:21
After packing up, we took a wander round Loughton Camp.

16:00:45
Some really tiny fungi (a bit like miniature chanterelles in appearance) growing out of this patch of moss.

16:04:16
More of Loughton Camp.

16:05:29
Erika running around Loughton Camp.

16:06:58
The sign for Loughton Camp.

16:07:51
More of the earthworks of Loughton Camp, and the girls horsing around.

16:09:07

16:10:01

16:11:26
A nicely tree lined section of one of the embankments.

16:13:37

16:13:54
A plate fungus.

16:14:42
Heading away from Loughton Camp now, back towards the car.

16:15:27
Somebody had been den building!

16:15:36
More plat fungi.

16:15:56
Is this all one (beech?) tree?

16:18:19
An interesting cluster of little blobby fungus.

16:22:43
More plate fungus on a silve birch tree.

16:22:53
Tried to get a picture of the underside of it.

16:36:12
Getting close to the car again now - this bit of the woods had a strong smell of wild garlic, despite being a bit late in the season for it.

16:58:19
Back at the car, I got a can of shandy from the "Original Tea Hut" where we'd parked.

16:58:24
...and Erika had this rather terrifying looking slushie.
