Ridgeway: Wendover to Princes Risborough and Burns Night
Saturday 25th January 2020
I had originally planned to try and complete a longer section of the Ridgeway today, from Wendover to Watlington (or at least Lewknor, where there are some public transport options) but wasn't really feeling it with the slightly glum weather and cut short at Princes Risborough. Back at home in the evening we had a mini Burns Night, just the three of us.

Got the train to Wendover and picked up where I had left off last time.

09:53:38

09:57:00
Wendover station is at the edge of the town and it only takes a few minutes to get out into open countryside. Albeit that I probably wasn't enjoying it at its best given the grey skies today.

09:57:25

10:01:00
Probably wonderful views to be had from here on a clearer day!

10:07:00
Bacombe Hill.

10:11:14

10:11:50

10:12:23

10:15:20
Memorial to the Second (?) Boer War.

10:15:24
Again, would probably be a great view in better weather!

10:15:26

10:15:57

10:16:19

10:17:18

10:17:29
Still, I tried to keep upbeat and plodded on regardless.

10:17:37

10:20:16

10:25:38

10:36:15

10:37:00
A wooded section, through which I have to admit I was staring at my phone rather than being "in the moment". Because there wasn't much og a moment to be in.

10:43:58

11:00:16
Stopped off at this farm shop and bought some supplies.

11:01:55
Part of the Chequers Estate now.

11:03:34
With lots of officious warning signs accordingly.

11:09:40

11:09:46

11:13:09
The house at Chequers.

11:23:24

11:25:42

11:26:13

11:39:02
The pub where David Cameron took President Xi a few years back. A bit too early to make this my lunch stop, and I suspected it would be a bit too gastro for my tastes.

11:43:17
So I diverted from the Ridgeway somewhere around here to head to where I'd planned to stop for lunch.

11:48:41

11:57:14
Nice to see the ancient name of the route of which the Ridgeway forms part, finding its way onto modern street names.

11:57:18

11:57:54
Some pretty cottages in the village of Whiteleaf.

11:58:07

11:58:45
Snowdrops on the grassy bank in front of the Red Lion at Whiteleaf, where I had chosen to stop for lunch.

11:59:02
Just about perfect timing!

12:04:55
Inside the Red Lion. Pleasingly unfussy.

12:37:18
Outside the Red Lion again after lunch.

12:39:23
Whateve this climbing plant was it looked very amalgamated into the wall.

12:47:24
Bit of a steep climb now to rejoin the Ridgeway.

12:54:51
Atop Whiteleaf Hill, for yet another view which would probably have been very nice in better weather.

12:55:23

12:55:25

12:57:36
Some den building had been taking place here.

12:57:38

12:57:43

13:01:19
Continuing along the Ridgeway.

13:02:14

13:05:31

13:06:03
Taken in portrait mode. I do seem to find these sign posts quite aesthetically pleasing.

13:08:06
One last wasted view...

13:09:01

13:15:46
On the descent into Princes Risborough now.

13:24:09
Nice to see the Icnkield Way marked again. This is where I left the Ridgeway for today.

13:29:09
An interesting stone.

13:42:12
Princes Risborough had some quite pretty buildings in its centre, but the shops and pubs all seemed a bit uninspiring somehow. Maybe it was just the weather and my overall lack of enthusiasm today.

13:56:48

13:57:05

13:57:18
Salt anyone?

14:00:09
At Princes Risborough station now.

16:41:06
Back at home now, and thought I'd open a half bottle of Nyetimber out in the garden.

16:41:15

16:42:37

16:43:11
And some crisps!

17:27:11
Out shopping for Burns Night. The local greengrocer had sold out of swede!

18:37:39
My kilt getting its annual outing (actually it's more like once every two or three years.

18:51:48
My Scotch Broth with some Highland Park and of course the tartan table cloth.

19:02:51
Erika isn't really a big fan of vegetarian haggis... but she struggled through.

19:02:58
Haggis neeps and tatties. Lovely.
