Devil's Dyke to Chanctonbury Ring
Saturday 30th April 2022
Went for a walk in the South Downs today, thinking I might also do another wild camp at the end of it, but ultimately decided against it.

Passing through Blackfriars station on the way down to the downs.

13:13:46
The bus from Brighton to the Devil's Dyke.

13:13:50
Rather nice views from the bus.

13:20:38
At the Devil's Dyke now. Lovely day today.

13:28:54
The bright pink ice cream van looked a bit incongruous with the rolling green hills.

13:29:10
People lounging around atop Devil's Dyke.

13:29:39
Had lunch at the pub, and somehow ended up choosing a pint of Guinness (alas no Harveys on offer here).

13:56:22
I think I must have set off by this point. Sweeping views from (near) the Devil's Dyke along the ridge of the South Downs, and I think you can see all of today's walk laid out before me, with Chanctonbury Ring that final promontory on the horizon.

Still love these South Downs Way sign posts.

14:56:12
Just after Truleigh Hill, where the South Downs Way follows a road for a bit.

15:43:17
Beyond Botolphs, climbing Annington Hill, where there's a pig farm, I spotted this pheasant.

Piglets at the Botolphs pig farm.

Beyond the pig farm now, and looking back down Annington Hill.

16:19:58
Where the SDW turns to the north for a bit, somewhere near the top of Annington Hill, there was a welcome bench, and I sat for a while as surprisingly my feet were hurting.

17:26:59
Quite a long gap since the previous photo! (I was filming on my GoPro intermittently) Anyway, now arriving at Chanctonbury Ring.

17:35:17
I decided to sit for a while atop Chanctonbury Ring, while I figured out what to do next. I supped this can of South Downs Cider (which I picked up in Brighton station) while mulling it over, which initially I thought quite pleasant, but as I proceeded I found increasingly far too sweet.

18:03:06
Eventually after weighing my options I decided to abandon the idea of a wild camp tonight. Instead I made a dash down to Washington to catch the last bus to Pulborough, from where I'd be able to get a train back to London.

18:18:12
A rather pretty woodland scene in Combe Holt, on the slopes of Chanctonbury Hill.

18:22:19
I also got to pass through this field of sheep and lambs.

18:22:24
They seemed pleasantly unperturbed by me.

18:28:17

18:28:19
Lovely.

19:11:38
On arrival at Pulborough, having bought a return ticket to Brighton, I was going to get a single ticket from here to wherever the two lines meet, but the machine wasn't working.
