Saturday in Genoa
Saturday 14th June 2014
Arrived in Genoa at lunchtime, foccaccia for lunch, followed by an afternoon wandering round Genoa, taking in the Neptune pirate ship. In the evening started with Aperitivo at Caffe degli Specchi then dinner at I Tre Merli, to sample some Genoese specialities.

The lobby at the Grand Hotel Savoia in Genoa.

Our room at the Grand Hotel Savoia.

13:59:07
First food in Italy - a light lunch from a focacceria near the hotel. We also got some Farinata (a kind of bread made from chick pea flour).

14:06:33
La Focacceria di Teobaldo, where we picked up our lunch.

14:56:19
Wandering around the streets of Genoa.

I liked this balcony.

Happy Gelato - Erika was given a bib and a little bambino sized ice cream at Profumo di Rosa.

15:27:17
Inside Profumo di Rosa, with the very nice lady who runs it.

15:31:34
More ice cream fun.

15:32:21
Outside of Profumo di Rosa. For me this was the best gelato of the trip.

15:42:12
The Neptune, a mock pirate ship in Genoa.

15:45:59
Cannons.

15:53:58
It was quite ornate.

15:57:15

15:57:33
Sheltering from the sudden downpour!

16:02:57
It got pretty wet pretty quickly.

16:05:04
Rain coming through the floorboards of the deck. A reminder it wouldn't have been much fun to be on a ship like this in a storm!

16:12:41
Waiting at the ticket office for the rain to stop. The lady on the till kindly gave Erika her seat to sit on.

16:58:47
Back at the hotel.

16:59:03

17:57:03
We thought we'd try out Genoa's Metro system. It wasn't really worth it, as it seemed like we spent longer waiting for a train than it would have taken to walk.

18:16:58

18:28:48
A monster made from old tyres etc.

18:42:39
San Lorenzo cathedral.

18:51:07
Caffe degli Specchi - the cafe of mirrors. One of Genoa's oldest cafes.

18:53:57
We just ordered a couple of pre-dinner drinks whilst Erika was having an early evening nap, and a rather impressive array of snacks appeared - our first time to experience the recent aperitivo trend in Italy.

18:54:55
Our drinks and snacks.

18:55:02
Me with a silly facial expression.

18:56:01

19:56:28
In I Tre Merli (the three crows) where we had dinner. This is a rather important occasion - Erika having her first pasta in Italy.

19:58:15

19:58:29
This is apparently a sort of Genoese style of pizza, where the cheese is liquid and inside the base.

20:09:09

20:23:46
Stuffed vegetables, thr stuffing turned out to include bacon, so I didn't actually eat any in the end.

20:38:11
First of many pesto pasta dishes - served in the traditional Genoese style, with green beans and potatoes.

21:04:24
Outside I Tre Merli, this area is called the Porta Antica (old harbour) but actually looks very modern now.

21:04:30
The front of I Tre Merli. Not really very promising from outside, but I think this is generally regarded as one of the best places to sample Genoese specialities. I definitely liked it.

21:22:55
Taking an evening stroll.

21:30:49
Our hotel from outside.

22:30:58
Erika going to bed very late! (Although in UK terms it was only really 9:30 at this point).
