Burns Night

Tuesday 25th January 2005. Having developed an interest for all things Scottish recently, I thought it would be appropriate to hold a Burns' night. Having never been to one before, it was a bit ad hoc, but I hope I am right in saying a good time was had by all nonetheless.

20:26:01 Kev and Chie enjoying a quiet drink before the throng arrived.

20:58:14 The throng must be here now then - Rob digs into the Scotch Broth.

20:58:27 More people engaged in the ancient art of brothing.

20:59:01 A bit of Kev, plus Sam, Chie and the host (me that is). Note Sam here demonstrating how to sit correctly whilst bekilted.

20:59:22 Rob had not only brought his own whisky, but his own vessels from which to drink it. Now that's preparation for you!

20:59:37 Shanie, James and Allie over the other side of the room.

21:20:06 Right, so it looks as though the haggis had arrived, and this is me reading the obligatory "Ode to a Haggis"...

21:20:44 ...and doing the usual stabbing routines whilst doing so...

21:20:49 I think we went for a somewhat expigated version of the Ode...

21:21:00 ...and again...

21:24:13 Somebody helpfully suggested we should all just dig in and help ourselves.

21:56:37 A nice picture of one corner of the room here - Sam, Kate, Rob, Kev and Sam again.

21:57:46 A stunning picture of kilts. What a lovely array of tartan.

21:57:54 This could look like three Scotsmen, but I think it is officially only 1 and 5/8ths.

22:13:21 The dessert (which I gave the name Marr's Hurdies) presented something of a challenge, given that I'd forgotten quite how hard shortbread is.

22:13:47 I was hoping for more stabbing motions here, but sadly there were none...

22:14:17 ...a bit of stabbing going on here.

22:21:49 Dinner all over and done with, it was time for some recitals. We got Rob and Kate to do our own version of the address to the lassies and the reply from the lassies, all through the medium of poems.

22:22:24 ...they read "Ode to a Mouse" and "Ode to a Louse", a verse (or should I say stanza) at a time each.

22:22:55 This was highly amusing, obviously the pictures don't entirely do it justice...

22:23:38 This is me laughing uncontrollably, and looking pretty moronic whilst doing so.

22:23:48 I think they're coming to an end now...

22:45:49 Well as it was a school night people had to think about leaving... so we got this nice group shot before everyone started to wend...

22:51:21 Rob and his entourage outside the house...

23:18:02 I think this is supposed to be me showing how happy I am about the bottle of Glenfiddich Kev gave me, and the evening in general.

23:22:40 Fittingly we end as we started, with Kev and Chie enjoying a quiet drink.
