First Day on the Island

Boat the Bardsey in the morning.

John's Pictures

00:00:00
(timestamp out of order) Look, it's our home for the week - Plas Bach. By the looks of things the tractor is already dropping off our luggage.

06:05:24
I seem to have awoken around 6AM then! Nice of Tim and Dot to lend us their garden to sleep in. The more sensible among us had opted to sleep in tents. (I'm therefore not including myself and Dad in "the more sensible among us").

06:07:18
My bed for the previous night, and a slight glimpse of a sunrise. Pink sky in the morning...

06:09:21
Alex and Luke had chosen to sleep in the car. I'd asked why this was the case given there was lots of tent space, and Dad had simply responded "they like cars". Fair enough. Look, you can see a bit of my rucksack in this picture.

06:14:50
A little diddy kitten!

06:17:44
A cockerel and a, errr, a, errr, a - nother bird.

07:37:14
Now this must be Pwlhelli harbour, by the look of all the yachts and so on.

07:39:36
Here's Alex, perhaps trying to go for the rugged seafaring look in this picture.

07:41:00
Can't quite read the sign here, but I imagine it was something comicial like "Warning: water".

07:46:11
Luke taking a trolley full of luggage down the little ramp affair.

07:47:40
Janie, Becca and Sue mill about whilst the menfolk do all the heavy lifting and carrying (this is in fact entirely untrue, but you might believe it from this picture).

07:54:19
It looks like we're all in the boat and on our way then!

07:55:22
Dad, coming from a long running naval heritage, always seems very happy being on boats. Odd life jacket though.

08:01:08
I think this may have been the first year of full on camera frenzy. Previous Bardsey trips I'd had the monopoly, but this year everyone was taking pictures of everyone else all the time.

08:08:28
Martin looking surprisingly relaxed there. Obviously though, beneath this calm exterior, he is already considering jumping overboard.

08:10:55
Dad is in fact so relaxed being on the boat he had a bit of a nap.

08:14:08
Dad is introduced to Minky.

08:22:25
I guess I was trying to make Minky look like an intrepid explorer or something.

08:54:36
Ahhhh, always nice, the first glimpse of Bardsey.

09:16:04
Nearly there now it seems!

09:16:17
I seem to never be able to get enough shots of the lighthouse.

09:19:36
This must have been taken from the little dingy (dinghy?). There goes the Highlander!

09:20:42
Yep, back to the mainland for the Highlander I guess. Never been too sure why it's called the Highlander. In fact it seems a bit ironic, when we go to Eigg we get on a boat from Arisaig (in the Highlands) called the Shearwater. When we go to Bardsey, an island famed for its Manx Shearwaters, we get on a boat called the Highlander. Maybe they could do a swap....?

09:21:30
A dingy full to the brim with dingy people.

09:26:56
On terra firma then. The youngfolk mill about on the causeway.

09:28:40
A view down the causeway where an amount of milling still seems to be taking place.

09:29:36
The posthouse, including a handy map of Bardsey. Not sure what Luke is pointing at here. Maybe he's spotted a nice bird.

10:27:34
Yep here's the tractor with all our stuff, out the front of Plas. What service!

10:31:46
They boys' room. Luke's pose here is very Reeves and Mortimerish, in my opinion.

10:32:25
I think I may have been lucky enough to get a room to myself. Here's me, in it.

11:20:51
Well, we've been in the house about an hour, so it must already by time to eat something.

12:05:40
I think this is me cooking lunch. Judging by the colour, I'd expected it's the old favourite tomato and lentil soup.

12:06:14
How happy I seem, slaving over a hot stove.

12:27:19
No week on Bardsey would be complete without the joys of Ty Bach. This year was no exception, in fact, everyone seemed to want to get thoroughly involved in the whole process.

12:55:02
Ah yes, now I remember. Dad and Janie had wisely chosen to stay somewhere else for the week - Carreg Bach, the little house just up the hill from where all the young folk were going to stay.

12:55:47
Me, basking in the joys of ingrowing toenails. Don't worry, I finally got them sorted out about a year after this picture was taken.

13:16:29
The tractor, very iconic.

13:20:48
Dad, outside Carreg Bach, proudly holding aloft the first loaf baked on the island this year.

13:25:50
Look! It's Dennis!!

14:45:11
Sue and Becca not wanting to spoil themselves by enjoying too much of the great outdoors.

15:10:12
All in all it did at times turn into a quite indoorsy sort of week, probably due to the number of lazy youngsters...

15:15:58
Plas Bach's back. Were you to have this picture hanging on your wall, and then to have it stolen, but later had it returned, you could comment "Plas Bach's back's back.". Indeed, retelling said events to a famous composer might result in: "Plas Bach's back's back, Bach.". OK, yes, I'll stop.

15:21:53
I think I must have gone for a little wander down to the coast all by myself. Here's a view along the coastline, and, look, I got the lighthouse in again!

15:30:16
Me and Minky spending some quality time together, atop a cliff.

15:45:54
Sadly, despite my strong attempts to divert such catastrophic events, Monopoly became a recurring theme of the week. Note the novelty improvised playing pieces.

16:59:45
This is an exceedingly scary picture of Lucy staring though the window.

18:34:25
More Monopoly. On the plus side though, it appears beer was also involved.

18:59:39
Becca's torture here may have been some kind of forfeit for losing Monopoly. I can't remember.

19:12:21
Ahhhh dinner. You know, I can't remember what we had (I am writing this over two years after the event however!). Erm, it looks like potatoes and carrots were a constituent. Dad often got all of the really meaty meals out of the way at the start of the week, because, without adequate storage facilities, meat just wouldn't last. So from my point of view, the food usually got better as the week went on.

21:50:51

21:53:30
A biazrre picture indeed. Quite what prompted it I am not sure. Don't worry though, Minky is a trianed professional, he didn't come to any harm.

21:55:04
Luke still not looking remarkable enthused. Perhaps he was just tired?

21:55:44
Lucy and Martin very efficiently occupying just a single seat between them.

21:55:49
Quite confusing. I think this is a bit of Sue's head, with her jumper covering most of her face.

22:04:44
Whoever said Mexican waves needed a whole crowd of people?

22:11:33
An attempt at an "arty" picture, before sleepiness took over and I trudged off to bed.
