Aix to Monaco
Sunday 3rd September 2023
In the daytime we took the (budget version of) the TGV from Aix to Nice, then on from there to Monaco, arriving at our hotel around 3pm. Spent most of the rest of the afternoon at the hotel’s beach / pool. Then later on out for dinner at our old favourite restaurant on the beach, before heading back to the hotel for post-dinner cocktails (also on the beach).

Before leaving Aix we did a quick visit to the nearest supermarket to buy things for lunch on the train, and made a very brief detour to see this little park.

Our friends waving us off at Aix en Provence TGV station.

12:43:36
In the supermarket I picked up a half bottle of Bordeaux for the train journey.

Me and Erika nn the little connecting train from Nice to Monaco.

15:42:58
We had booked a room with a “partial sea view” and I suppose that was fair to say about this direction from the balcony of the first room we were assigned...

15:43:08
…but looking in the other direction from the balcony the view was like this.

15:43:24

15:55:00
So we asked to change rooms, and instead were given a room where the view from the balcony was like this.

…and with more of a view of Monaco in the other direction from the balcony.

15:56:28
Erika on the balcony. Much nicer I’m sure you’ll agree!

15:57:02
Erika in our room. We much preferred this one to the first one.

17:37:36
After a swim in the sea for an hour or so, I decided it was time for a Negroni from the beach bar.

17:38:47
Lovely.

Slightly silly selfie.

Handful of pebbles from the beach.

18:59:26
Dinner at our favourite restaurant in Monaco. It’s called Miami Plage (yes the name sounds naff, but the food is quite good) and is right on the beach, only a short walk from our hotel.

19:05:26
Better still, they had changed the menu a bit since our last visit to include some of our favourite things. This is a little basket of panisses (like socca / farinata, but a different shape) and barbajuans - the latter being the unofficial national dish of Monaco.

19:05:36
As if that weren’t enough - beignets de fleur de courgettes (deep fried courgette flowers in batter) - I was in heaven!

19:07:51
This was a great meal.

19:23:20

Ever present construction work!

20:31:36
Headed back to the hotel beach after that for cocktails.

20:34:00
Erika on the hotel beach after dark.

20:34:39
They made a mocktail for Erika, and I had another Negroni.

20:35:02
This was really lovely.

20:36:01
Sitting on the beach in the fading light sipping cocktails with Erika was absolutely magical.
